There Are More Than 3,500 Wigs in “Wicked”—Interview – Casson Living – World News, Breaking News, International News

Step behind the curtain and uncover the secrets of how the fantastical world of Wicked is brought to life on the silver screen. Join reporter Kirbie Johnson as she takes us on a special journey behind the scenes to explore the intricate process of creating the mesmerizing wigs, special effects makeup, and more that breathe life into the beloved characters of Wicked. Johnson recently had the opportunity to sit down with Frances Hannon, the brilliant hair and makeup designer responsible for the iconic looks of the characters in the Wicked films.

Frances Hannon, a highly acclaimed artist who has received both an Oscar and a BAFTA for her outstanding work, faced the monumental challenge of translating the captivating characters of Wicked from the Broadway stage to the big screen. With the first film already out and the second installment scheduled for release in 2025, Hannon had the daunting task of designing the hair, makeup, and prosthetics for over 3,000 background actors as well as the main characters.

One of the major hurdles Hannon encountered was adapting the appearances of the lead characters, Glinda and Elphaba, for the film adaptation. Unlike the stage actors who traditionally embody these roles, the film cast brought unique features that required careful consideration. For example, Ariana Grande, portraying Glinda in the film, has dark hair and eyes, unlike the character’s usual light features. Similarly, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba needed to authentically look green rather than just being painted green to transport viewers into the magical world of Wicked.

In her interview, Hannon shares the inspiration behind Ariana Grande’s look, the necessity of prosthetic ears for Cynthia Erivo’s transformation, and even teases a hairstyle that Grande won’t be seen sporting in the film.

As you delve into the enchanting realm of Wicked, uncover the enchantment behind the scenes as Frances Hannon brings these iconic characters to life with her imaginative vision and exceptional talent.
