Sergio Pérez loses Red Bull F1 seat with Liam Lawson waiting in wings

Red Bull has announced that they will be parting ways with Sergio Pérez following a challenging season in Formula One. Pérez, who joined the team in 2021, struggled to keep up with his teammate Max Verstappen, finishing 285 points behind him and causing Red Bull to lose the constructors’ championship title to McLaren.

On the flip side, Verstappen clinched his fourth consecutive drivers’ world title while Pérez failed to make a significant impact, ending the season in eighth place. Throughout his last 18 races with the team, Pérez was unable to secure a top-five finish, reflecting the tough season he endured.

In a statement expressing his gratitude for his time at Red Bull, Pérez said, “I’m immensely thankful for the past four years with Oracle Red Bull Racing and for the chance to race with such an incredible team. Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable journey and I will always cherish the successes we achieved together. We set records, reached incredible milestones, and I have had the honor of meeting so many amazing individuals along the way.”

Reports are circulating that New Zealander Liam Lawson is set to take Pérez’s place at Red Bull, with the 22-year-old already having competed in 11 races for the team’s sister outfit, RB.

Team principal Christian Horner did not shy away from acknowledging Pérez’s struggles, which had a direct impact on their championship aspirations. Horner commended Pérez for his contributions to the team’s previous successes, noting his role in securing constructors’ titles and supporting Verstappen in pivotal moments on the track.

“While Checo will not be racing for the team next season, he will always be a beloved team member and a cherished part of our history. Thank you, Checo,” said Horner in a heartfelt farewell statement to Pérez.
