British track and field legend, Roger Black, recently shared a personal update about his health journey. The 58-year-old Olympic silver medalist underwent open heart surgery to address a heart condition he has been managing since childhood.

Black revealed that he was diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve at a young age and has been under the care of the cardiac team at Southampton General Hospital for nearly five decades. Despite not showing any visible symptoms, a routine check-up last summer revealed a need for surgery to replace his aortic valve and repair his aortic root.

Throughout his successful athletic career, which includes winning a silver medal in the men’s 400m at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and securing gold for Great Britain in the 4x400m relays at world championships, Black never let his heart condition define him. He credits his resilience and determination for his achievements on the track.

Following his surgery, Black expressed gratitude towards the hospital staff for their care and support during his recovery. He also acknowledged his wife, Jules, for standing by his side throughout the process.
