Four NYC Deputy Mayors Resign Over Federal Involvement in Adams Case – Casson Living – World News, Breaking News, International News

On Monday, four top aides to New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced their resignations, adding to the growing list of controversies that have plagued his administration. This shake-up has created a notable power vacuum in the city’s leadership hierarchy.

This announcement comes on the heels of a February 10 directive from the Justice Department, which instructed federal prosecutors to drop corruption charges against Adams. Officials argued that the ongoing allegations were obstructing the mayor’s ability to enact President Biden’s policies, especially those related to immigration enforcement.

The corruption allegations against Adams were initially lodged in September and are linked to his actions during his time as Brooklyn borough president in 2014.

The resigning aides include First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer and Deputy Mayors Meera Joshi, Anne Williams-Isom, and Chauncey Parker. Their exits come amid intensifying calls for Governor Kathy Hochul to either push Adams out or for him to resign on his own accord.

Their resignations follow the departure of U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon and five other senior officials from the Justice Department last week, after Sassoon refused to withdraw the charges against Adams.

The mayor’s office confirmed the departures in a statement to NBC New York, commending the aides as “exceptional public servants who have been instrumental in the transformation of New York City.”

The statement detailed, “We have worked together to achieve record housing numbers, create the highest job count in the city’s history, support countless New Yorkers and migrants, develop innovative public spaces, and improve safety across the board. New Yorkers owe them a debt of gratitude for their invaluable contributions to our city.”

Reports suggest that Adams attempted to convince the aides to reconsider their resignations during a Zoom call over the weekend, but they ultimately decided to move forward with their plans.

Joshi, who held the position of Deputy Mayor of Operations, allegedly conveyed a joint statement from the departing aides in an email to agency commissioners.

“Given the extraordinary circumstances of recent weeks and to uphold the commitments we made to serve New Yorkers and our families, we have made the difficult decision to resign from our roles,” the statement read.

TIME has reached out to the Mayor’s office for additional comments.
